New Year’s 2007 brought several firsts: Davey’s first New Year’s, our first New Year’s as parents, the first New Year’s Eve either of us can remember that we didn’t make it to midnight (z-z-z-z-z-z), and Davey’s FIRST STEPS!

Yes, our little demolition man is walking! On January 4, Davey surprised us and took 5-6 steps from the couch to daddy’s open arms. It was met with lots of cheering, clapping, some tears, and happy confusion for Davey (“Huh? What’d I do?”). And Davey’s Honorary Aunt Molly was there to witness it. We tried to get a second (and third) performance on video, but mom was too slow with the camera, so the footage shown here is from about a week later.
We’ve had no real mishaps yet other than lots of bumps on the noggin, since dad is the King of babyproofing. And each day his steps get steadier, less the drunken sailor and more the assured swagger of a baby orangutan. His walking has opened him up to new levels of joy and frustration, as well. On the one hand, he’s more “independent;” if he wants to go see what the cat is doing in the dining room, he goes and finds her (much to her dismay!). And he loves to chase and be chased–his giggles and squeals are more beautiful than any sound I’ve yet to hear in my life.
But the mobility also seems to be making him more keenly aware of his limitations–he can see the things he wants to grab more clearly, for instance, but he still can’t reach them. Which sometimes results in his walking around the kitchen exclaiming “Ahhhhrrag-uuuuhrah-haaahheeengh!”
Sometimes it’s hard not to laugh.
